Secret Well

One of the charming off-the-beaten-track features of Zagreb is an old water well. It’s hiding in Demetrova Street No11,  behind a massive wooden yard gate. Don’t hesitate to peek inside and get a closer look at the huge draw-well, the only preserved well of the Upper Town Zagreb. It’s as much as 27 meters deep! 

There’s an urban legend that says the walls of the well used to hide a tunnel ventilation opening. Zagreb underground is supposedly crowded with secret passages… The truth is that, during the recent conservation, traces of ceramic tiles and window frames were found. I wonder how those got there and could they really be part of a hidden tunnel outlet.
